MARWAN ABADO  (on tour)

acoustic desert blues

Abado’s instrument, the oud (oriental pear-shaped lute), has a similar significance in Arab music like the piano for Western culture. His compositions are based on the classical style of performance for Arab music, TAQ´SIM, and presents an innovative sound: oriental melodies that were not able to emerge in the Orient under the prevailing pop culture and an improvisational freedom as it is only found Western music in jazz. Poetic texts (written by himself or by other contemporary Arab poets) link Abado’s compositions with a lyrical context and characterize Abado as a chansonnier. Abado is a master of intimate listening pleasure and with the simplest of means is able to create a hypnotic mood with his sonorous voice and the archaic sound of his oud.  Abado is constantly seeking to bridge the Orient and the West and works together with musicians from diverse cultures and with different styles in addition to his long-time duo partner Peter Rosamnith. He has played with Aliosha Biz, Timna Brauer, Alegre Corréa, Yair Dalal, Krysztof Dobrek, Franz Hautzinger, Kamila Jubran, Otto Lechner, Roland Neuwirth, and many more.

He was awarded the distinction of best artist in the category “world & folk” of the year 2005 by the Austrian music magazine concerto for the CD and live programme “´s geht eh” that he performed jointly with K. Dobrek, A. Biz, A. Correa and R. Neuwirth. For his CD ”Kabila“ from the year 2006, he was named second-best musician in the same category. In November 2008 Abado received the Federal Medal of Intercultural Dialogue by the Austrian Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture.

Since 1987, Marwan Abado has performed on international stages throughout Europe and in the Arab region but also in Cuba and the US. His activities go far beyond just performing concerts. He composes music for films and plays, and develops concepts for culture enterprises and also gives lectures on Arab music.

His oud and voice blend with violin, percussion and accordion from three Western musicians - it´s one of this collaborations that work quintesssentially well. Together thy create an impressionistic, mesmerging sound with shades of minimalism and even hints of baroque music. This combination suits Abado´s dreamy songs perfectly. songlines

A nostalgic travelogue of poetic, lively acoustic performance from Austrian-based Palestinian oud player and singer Abado, with terrific feathery percussion from Peter Rosmanith. f-roots

Marwan Abado, the excellent oud player, singer and composer created with KABILA again oriental music, which is in evidence and comprehensible to everybody. His melodies put human feelings across, grow up with the words to an intense whole. Solely the timbre of the music and the Arabic language lead to the Orient - the stories itselves could take place all over the world, but Beirut is the home of Abado, so why not refer to it. jazzzeit

Anecdotal. Tasty. Quirky. These are some of the words that could be used to describe a show by a Lebanes born Palestinian who composes music in Vienna with Oriental, African, South-Asian and, of course, the so-called Western tones. Marwan Abado, singer, composer and oud player, brought his borderless music to the audience in Markabe - a show teaming him with Austrian percussion wizard Peter Rosmanith. The Daily Star
